Kink-resistant medical products made possible with Celanese EVA polymers

DALLAS & WOBURN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Celanese Corporation (NYSE: CE), a global technology and specialty materials company, will present “Innovations in kink-resistant ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer formulations specially developed for single-layer medical tubing applications” on Tuesday, September 13 at the Medical Tubing 2016 conference in Woburn, Mass., highlighting the advantages of EVA polymers over PVC materials for medical bags and tubing.

“While PVC is still prevalent in the bag and tubing market, medical OEMs are looking for alternative materials,” said Bin Zhang, product development chemist at Celanese. “EVA polymers do not require plasticizers and there are no leachable or extractable concerns. Celanese’s Ateva® G EVA polymers have been widely used in total parenteral nutrition bag applications to support the efforts of major OEMs who want to achieve 100 percent non-PVC nutrition bag sets.”

“Celanese continues to invest in EVA polymer technologies and material sciences critical to our medical and pharmaceutical customer’s needs,” said Verghese Thomas, chief technology and innovation officer, Celanese. “Our EVA polymers are customized to meet critical internal quality parameters and are further supported by Celanese’s technical know-how to create solutions for our strategic customers.”

On the design and production front, tubing configurations are becoming more complex, including increasingly sophisticated multi-layer, multi-lumen and micro-bore designs. These must be produced to extremely tight tolerances and at higher throughputs to deliver cost efficiencies. At the Medical Tubing 2016 conference, leading experts will discuss how extrusion technologies are being developed and refined to meet these considerable challenges.

During the Celanese expert presentation, Zhang will focus on how EVA can be a solution in the development of kink-resistant EVA formulations. The presentation will highlight the advantages of Celanese EVA polymers and introduce details on development of kink-resistant EVA formulations for medical tubing applications.
